Kenneth was a scholar and schoolteacher, fluent in Latin and French. He
came to Dunedin NZ C1859/60 to find accomodation and work and then his fiancee Maragaret
Matheson was to follow.
This she did on the ship Velore sailing from London on 07/02/1861 and arriving Port
Chalmers on 07/08/1861. A copy of the diary of her voyage is
recorded as part of this site. Kenneth and Margaret were maried within a few weeks.They
had two children Catherine known as Kitty (see the 1862 letter
announcing her birth) who was eventually to marry her cousin Alexander,
son of Donald; and Alexander John who died at Wanganui during a typhoid epidemic and is
buried in Donald Morrison's family plot. Kenneth took a job as teacher for the
Nova Scotian settlement at Waipu.
Margaret died in 1866, less than five years after her marriage.
Kenneth then
married Margaret McGregor in 1869. They had three children, William Grant,
John Roderick & Charles Caulder, none of whom married.
Kenneth spent the final years of his life with Kitty & Alexander and is buried at
Hamilton East Cemetery.
